MORETON ISLAND OIL SPILL FROM THE PACIFIC ADVENTURERA 185 metre container ship, Pacific Adventurer, was enroute from Newcastle to Indonesia via Brisbane when it lost 31 containers, approximately seven nautical miles east of Cape Moreton. A quantity of heavy fuel oil escaped from the ship as a result of damage caused by the falling containers. The Queensland Government has declared Moreton Island, Bribie Island and the southern area of the Sunshine Coast a disaster area. A whole-of-government response is in place in affected areas, including agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Emergency Services and local government. Our office is assisting those affected by the incident, with their compensation claims. Claimants must remember that claims do have time limits; we can advise each business of their relevant time limits. Claims are dealt with on an individual basis, so no class of claim has priority. Precise details are required to form your claim, which if not done correctly, may hurt your prospects of success or at the very least, may reduce the size of a claim significantly. We will also advise claimants as to exactly what record keeping and other documentation will be required to assist the claims process. The insurer will engage lawyers very quickly to assist with the negotiating and settlement of compensation claims. The insurer’s role is clearly to minimise the claims. We recommend any claimant uses our specialist Team. We will ensure that the claim is treated fairly, and that maximum compensation is secured.
